In 2012 I attended my first writer s conference OWFI and listened to the keynote speaker tell wonderful stories and share writing advice bold as any I have heard That man was Steven James and I assumed his novels would be as entertaining as his orationLike many people nowadays I have uite a reading list Recently I did some catching up and found the Pawn to be a fairly good serial killer suspense novelJames has an engaging voice and crafts a story well Later in the book the plot seemed to march rather than dance Lots of challenges were thrown in the path of the protagonist I began to feel the story lost some of its focus when the Jones Town incident came into the plotThe lead character Patrick Bowers has a troubled step daughter who has resorted to cutting after her mother died Bowers and Tessa s relationship is strained This added to the stakes and is an issue I haven t read much about in fiction Though not a main part of the plot this is one example of how James raises the stakes for his charactersAll in all a good story entertaining but I had my hopes set a little too high after hearing James speak He is a truly gifted orator The stories he told at the conference had eveyone on the edges of their seats

This was one of the books that was offering for free over Christmas I ve previously downloaded many of the free books and never actually got round to reading them but for some reason this one held my attention long enough for me to at least give it a tryNot only is there the main plot line of the murders that are taking place but there is a sub plot where revenge is being plotted on a catastrophic level Both of these are woven together brilliantly with the links between the two slowly beign brought to lightAdded to the mix is some brilliant characters the bad guys in The Pawn are truly evil James takes us back into their history to show that they ve had life long issues The good guys also have issues nobodies perfect and I thin that these are played out brilliantly All of the characters are very well portrayed and I particularly liked Bowers relationship with his step daughter I m hoping that she s given a larger role in future novelsJames s writing style reminds me of early Patricia Cornwell novels or maybe James Patterson some of the scene s are very descriptive and definitely made me cringe It was mentioned on that this was Christian fiction I have no idea what categorises a book as Christian but I find it very difficult to believe that this could be it There wasn t any profanity used but I wouldn t have expected Christian fiction to be uite so graphic As Bowers is still getting over his wife s untimely death from cancer The Pawn also uestions God in places which seems like a natural reaction to me although not in a novel that s allegedly Christian fictionAll in all I was surprisingly impressed with this book and I m looking forward to the other 2 books in the trilogy maybe I should have read of the freebies I ve downloaded

[PDF/EPUB] ( The Pawn (Patrick Bowers Files)) For years, like so many of you, when I wanted to read a book it was a trip to the bookstore or a search through to find a book. I'd only look at mainstream authors and for me that was a Cook, Crighton, Cussler, DeMille, Higgins, Sandford or an

[PDF/EPUB] ( The Pawn (Patrick Bowers Files)) I almost gave this a three star review because I did not care for the ending, but I do not enjoy thrillers and this book had me turning pages up until the ending so I’m going to raise the score a bit to counter my bias

Without wanting to give away too much the only mention of Christianity was a man with a dying wife who was struggling with his recollections of the priests she had asked to be at her bedside and that he'd struggled to hide his animosity from
