Review David King: Designer, Activist, Visual Historian David King: Designer, Activist, Visual Historian Read & download Ë 8 Ching out into image led journalism He developed a particular interest in revolutionary Russia and began amassing a collection of graphic art and photographs ultimately accumulating around 250000 images that he shared with news outlets Throughout his life King blended political activism with his graphic design work creating anti Apartheid and anti Nazi posters c. Although David King may have been well regarded by others in his field he is not a household name I think a lot of people will say they have never heard of him and yet will have come across many examples of his output especially if they were around in the 70s and 80sPersonally I was not familiar with the name and thought I would try going outside my comfort zone with this book but soon realised that I was very familiar with a lot of King s designs I do remember during the late 70s and 80s noticing that there was very much a house style to left wing publications posters badges etc but had not realised that this was because one single person was responsible for most of it I now know who designed the ANL logo that is on the Transport workers against the Nazis badge that I still ownA few years back I wandered into a room at Tate Modern that featured a lot of Russian constructivist posters I loved the aesthetic of them and could see how it had been reflected in a lot of posters in London in the 80s It turns out that all the posters were from David King s collection and they had indeed informed his ideasKing was also responsible for some album covers for the Who and Jimi Hendrix I subseuently discovered although the book makes no mention of it that he designed the logo for the band Crass Before all that he worked on the Sunday Times Magazine when that was a trailblazer Our media studies classroom at school was plastered with layouts from that magazine possibly even including some from King s time there so it turns out that I have had plenty of interaction with King s work even if I had never put a name to itThe book itself is well illustrated as you would hope with examples from all areas of King s life from journalism activism archivist and author It has a thick card cover that is completely suare with the pages the way a paperback is so it is an unusual artefact in itself and very accessible even for casual readers like meOne warning though after reading this you may find yourself hunting down some of King s own books Personally I am very tempted by The Commissar Vanishes
