I first came across Jeff Wheeler s books when suggested I buy The ueen s Poisoner from the Kingfountain series about a year ago and I ve since read voraciously through everything he has written apart from the Landmoor books and the Harbinger series looks to be no exceptionI was curious about this one as it was described as Dickensian uite a departure from all his other medieval fantasy novels But I was not disappointedI was completely enthralled by this new world and the story itself which somehow managed to simultaneously feel like a period novel and a fantasy book set within the classic story trope of an orphan beset by fate and other characters to prevent them from reaching their destinyMr Wheeler s ability to combine compelling storylines with complex and sympathetic characters while keeping all his novels family friendly is an astonishing and marvellous feat and I m only surprised he isn t popular Having just finished reading one of his earlier series it s clear to see that Mr Wheeler is only improving in his writing skills with this novel his most sophisticated yet I was amazed at how emotionally drawn into this novel I was At times I felt so passionately about the plight of the two main protagonists that I found tears coming to my eyes in despair and anger at how they were treated by some of the other characters Not since the introduction of Dolores Umbridge have I found myself so passionately hating a fictional being as I did Mrs PullmanI laughed I cried and I practically breathed this novel down Now I can t wait for the next one
