So this book this story it was one of a very small number of books that I was able to read this month But than having read it what is important about it is that I actually loved reading itAs you well know I am partial to retellingsThis one not only fits that bill but it also had the advantage of having been approved by most of my bookish friendsSo one of these days in which I was reading and still am a particularly boring story I decided to just start with this one Just give it a goBryony who most of us would see as a Belle honestly don t is a very sensible gardener who lives with her two sisters One of them a very practical don t mess with me kind of girl about whom I would love to read about The other well she s most of a ninnyOne day due to fate also known as rutabagas issues Bryony gets lost during a blizzard After contemplating the eventual loss of multiple fingers and toes Bryony gets to this mysterious where the hell did you come from mansionAccompanied by her not very smart but faithfully donkey don t ask Bryony enters the mysterious and magical houseOkay so you see where this is going rightOkay I don t want to reveal much of the plot so I just want to say that the characters are really well done They may act true to their roles but they are also uite modern in their view of those actual roles like when the Beast recognizes that Bryony is in fact somewhat his hostageThe romance is there but it is not the vital part of the storyAlso I think that this story would be better received by an adult crowd than an ya oneThis may be a retelling but it is one with thorny spikes At times it crosses the horror and sexual lineWhat I am trying to say with this is that purists of the retelling may have some issues with itAs for me I like being surprised so yes definitely recommendedPaperback please

I discovered T Kingfisher aka Ursula Vernon through The Seventh Bride and became immediately enad If you liked The Seventh Bride you will also love this one it s very much in keeping with it as far as tone and themesThis one is a retellingre imagining of Beauty and the Beast In the introduction the author says she was inspired by Robin McKinley s Rose Daughter Coincidentally it was I believe McKinley s other retelling of the story Beauty which introduced me to the whole concept of fairytale retellings I guess I was six or so when it came out and a big fan of Andrew Lang s Fairy books and such but I remember sitting in the bookstore and realizing It s a fairytale but it s also a WHOLE BOOK I was highly favorably impressed And since then I ve been a fan of the genreThis version is right up there at the top of best takes on the story Vernon manages to retain all of the magic and wonder inherent to the story while infusing it with uite a bit of humor and a modern sassiness Her Beauty Bryony is uite a bit smart and self reliant that we might expect She gets into her own scrapes and depends only on herself to get out of them the father character is not present In addition this version dares one element which I ve certainly considered before but which I don t think I ve previously seen put into practice at the end view spoilerthere is no magic transformation back into a handsome prince You love someone for who they are because of who they are they don t magically transform into someone different because you love them hide spoiler
