Joan Kelly is today remembered as one of the founding mothers of Women s History and this collection of her essays prepared while she was dying from cancer at the age of 54 was meant to commemorate her contribution to the field she helped to invent It s a good introduction to the theoretical trends of the early years of the study of gender in history and to feminism as it stood in the 1970s and 80s It is also readable and less obscure than such theory would be after the cultural turn and so makes a good introduction for undergraduates and others uncomfortable or unfamiliar with complicated theoretical writingAlthough Kelly did not live to see the publication of this book she did provide an introduction which gives some insight into her own development as a feminist and historian and a feminist historian She tells us that she started out with no particular agenda a typical Renaissance historian who championed the great transformation in perspective that had brought about humanism and modernity Then one day Women s Historian Gerda Lerner contacted her for a contribution to a project of women historians Kelly declined because she did not see herself as defined by her sex but Lerner took the opportunity to meet with her and proselytize Kelly became enraptured and convinced of the powerful transformation that adding women to history could make in historical understanding This introduction leads me to discuss the essay which is presented second in the volume Did Women Have a Renaissance I think this is probably the most read and most often cited of her work and it is certainly illustrative of the transformation she speaks of in the introduction From being a champion of the Renaissance as a liberation from the intellectually stifling Middle Ages Kelly is now a critic of its impact on women who she sees as losing agency after a period of much closer partnership with men Where love had once been represented as the vassalage of the Knight for his Lady during the Renaissance writers began to uestion whether women were even capable of love or of humanity itself Man during this period became representative of human achievement and by definition opposed itself to the frailty and inferiority of women who saw their access to the courts and to public existence increasingly curtailed The Renaissance appears to be a step backward in Kelly s new renditionI m inclined to discuss the first and the third essays together These are The Social Relations of the Sexes and The Doubled Vision of Feminist Theory Both are short theoretical pieces which allow Kelly to define fundamental terms such as patriarchy and feminism as they relate to historical understanding In Social Relations she argues that all categories class minority group caste approximate the position of women but fail to define it adeuately p8 In other words all oppression derives from and imitates the oppression of women an argument Lerner later made explicitly in The Creation of Patriarchy In the Doubled Vision Kelly contests the notion of separate spheres for public and private and the assumption that they constitute arenas in which men and women could express themselves eually This argument has been repeated and amplified many times sinceThe final essays in the book Early Feminist Theory and the uerelles des Femmes and Family and Society serve to demonstrate the ways in which Women s History functions not only to tear down old historical assumptions but to build new ones These are the longest essays in the volume and they each give considerable historical detail The first discusses the importance of Christine de Pisan s The Treasure of the City of Ladies in developing a new feminine identity and the development of feminism outside of the modern era The second is a sweeping exploration of social development in feminist terms covering a wide swath of history through the lens of relations within families I find it interesting how much importance she gives to work outside of the home something which may be eroding for both men and women as new models of connectivity shift to the internet and away from the factory and office In all this is a book which makes an excellent case for the important transformations that gender would make to historical inuiry one which simultaneously provides insight into the history of feminism and introduces the reader to its effects upon historical work It remains a powerful testament to its author Indebted Beginnings Indebted #05 posthumous essays by Joan Kelly a founder of women's studies represent a.
