Please excuse me while I go sit in this corner and be dreadfully underwhelmed The God of Small Things won the Booker Prize in 1997 and I d heard very good things about it And yet I really didn t like it It s not a bad book far from it The characters she has created are really wonderful and she has succeeded in evoking all the noises and sights and smells of Kerala even for someone like me who s never been further east than Poland The narrative structure is disjointed wandering from the now to 1969 and back again but I never found myself getting confused by itThe language use is inventive and creative and original there were times when I found myself pausing to read back over a particular metaphor or simile because it was just that beautiful or thought provoking But the further I read into the book the strained the language seemed It seems to be teetering and from the wonderfully ornate to a kind of thing that reminds me of Victorian architecture all curlicues and flourishes and bilious cherubs and buildings that look like gigantic overdone wedding cakes It s too much all at once overwhelming the eye and leaving me feeling faintly sea sickI don t like the tone she takes in parts of it either especially when she s talking about human nature or history or the caste system Not that I don t agree with a lot of what she says I do but she s too didactic I think it s her tendency to put every line in a new paragraph in these sections A subtle hand will always serve you better I think Making Out in Japanese of an imperial entomologist's moth with unusually dense dorsal tuftsWhen their English cousin Sophie Mol and her mother Margaret Kochamma arrive Algebraic Number Fields on a Christmas visit Esthappen and Rahel learn that Things Can Change in a Day That lives can twist into new ugly shapes even cease forever beside their river graygreen With fish in it With the sky and trees in it And.
